Introduction to Trip Summaries

This is a summary of our trip to Greece. This represents what we saw and where we went, along with some pertinent information about the sites. The purpose of the trip report summary page is to present factual information in a concise manner that makes it easy to read and get the information that you’d want quickly. (The only information that is a matter of opinion is the column, “Bang for Buck/Worth it?”. This is our opinion, which we will explain later.)

With that in mind, we’ll have a table per city containing the sites we went to, in the order that we went in. You may see duplicates. This is because we went to some of the sites twice (we sometimes do this for photography). Also, note that the column, “CC” refers to credit card acceptance.

You will also see a list of an optimized trip, representing what we would change from our trip if we could do it over. There’s also a list of the modes of transportation that we used and how long they took. Additionally, we have provided information on some alternative modes of transportation as well.

Since the information in these tables is only a summary – we won’t talk about the city or provide descriptions of the sites – we will have another post where we will have detailed trip reports for each city, along with explanations on what we put under the “Bang for Buck/Worth it?” column in the trip report summary.

Optimized Trip

There are a few ways that we would have changed our itinerary. Ideally, we would have put Athens towards the end of our trip, or in the middle of the trip. By putting Athens at the end, we wouldn’t have spent 6 nights in Athens (4 for sightseeing and the other 2 for transiting to Mykonos and returning from Santorini to depart to go back home). We actually had originally planned to see Athens last, but due to difficulty in finding accommodations for 4 consecutive nights, we couldn’t do that. We pretty much had the same problem with trying to find accommodations in Athens in the middle of our trip too, which is why Athens was at the beginning of our trip.

Speaking of Mykonos, knowing that there’s not a whole lot to see or do in Mykonos, we could’ve spent just the day there and then spent the night in Naxos instead of staying at a hotel in Mykonos, for a total of 2 nights in Naxos. This would have also saved us a good chunk of money on food and accommodations. Lastly, while we loved our time in Santorini, spending one less day would have been better (4 nights was still fine, but we ended up spending 5 days due to our flight leaving very late at night on the fifth day).

  • Day 1: Travel Athens -> Thessaloniki, after landing in Athens.
  • Day 2: Thessaloniki. Spend night in Thessaloniki.
  • Day 3: Pella, Dion, Mt. Olympus/Litohoro. Spend night in Meteora.
  • Day 4: Meteora/Kalampaka. Spend night in Delphi.
  • Day 5: Delphi, the Peloponnese coast (opt.). Sleep in Peloponnese coast.
  • Day 6: The Peloponnese coast, go to Athens.
  • Day 7: Early morning flight to Mykonos, see Mykonos in the morning, go to Delos. Take evening ferry to Naxos.
  • Day 8: Naxos (spend night or go to Paros in the evening).
  • Day 9: Paros (opt: Antiparos). Either spend night in Paros or take evening ferry to Santorini.
  • Day 10-Day 12/13: Santorini.
  • Day 13/14-Day 17: Athens.

All in all, we could’ve saved a total of 3 days, which we could’ve used to go to the few places that we didn’t see in Greece, but wanted to, like Mount Olympus, the Peloponnese coast, Rhodes, and/or Crete.

As I mentioned previously, most people don’t have as much vacation time as I did for this trip. Below is the minimum number of days to see the main points of interest in each place, along with travel time from place to place. This list along with the tables above should help you can get a better sense of where you want to and where you can spend your time.

  • Athens: 2 days (Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Agora, Monastiraki, Panathenaic Stadium, and National Archaeological Museum, if you have time)
  • Thessaloniki: 0.5 days (Agios Georgios and Rotunda, White Tower Museum, Aristotelous square)
  • Flight time from Athens to Thessaloniki: 1 hr; Total travel time: 3 hr
  • Drive time from Thessaloniki to Pella: 50 min
  • Drive time from Pella to Dion: 1h10
  • Drive time from Dion to Meteora: 2h5
  • Drive time from Meteora to Delphi: ~3.5 hr
  • Drive time from Delphi to Athens (city): 2.5 hr, 2h10 to airport
  • Flight time from Athens to Mykonos: 30 min; Ferry from Athens to Mykonos: ~4 hr
  • Ferry from Mykonos to Delphi: 30 min
  • Fast ferry from Mykonos to Naxos: 45 min; regular ferry: 1h15 min
  • Ferry from Naxos to Paros: 45 min; fast ferry: ~30 min
  • Ferry from Paros to Antiparos (main port): 35 min; ferry from Antiparos only port: 10 min
  • Ferry from Paros to Santorini: 4.5 hr; fast ferry: 3 hr
  • Ferry between Santorini and Athens: 9 hr; fast ferry: ~4.5 hr
  • Flight time from Santorini to Athens: 40 min

In my next post, we’ll talk about the specifics of each place and site. Stay tuned!
